NEA-NM, the largest union of educators in New Mexico,  asked its members in spring 2021 to share their legislative priorities. NM educators spoke up and said that their two largest issues were salaries and healthcare costs.

And when educators speak, their union, NEA-NM listens!

Based on their input, NEA-NM developed its NEA-NM Legislative Priorities document, and then its leaders and staff began working with members to turn priorities into realities.

Last year, NEA-NM successfully ran a statewide campaign to raise educator salaries and won the largest pay raises for educators in the nation. With the support of NM governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), teacher pay went up by an average of $X or by X% and we also won a $15 an hour minimum wage for all school staff.

But we knew that we had to address healthcare costs.

On average, NM educators pay $X towards monthly healthcare premiums. We know that educators and their families deserve more and so do our students, when there is high educator turnover.

So, we launched the Fully Fund Healthcare for NM Educators Campaign!

Path to Fully Funding Healthcare

It’ll take all of us to fully fund healthcare for NM’s educators. And NEA-NM is leading those efforts with its members, leaders, and alongside our healthcare champions.

Mic Drop From NM Governor

Our governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, announced on X, 2023 that she supported covering 100% of healthcare premium costs for educators! And our governor matched her rhetoric with her proposed budget: the governor’s budget asks the state legislature to fully fund healthcare for educators.
